Volkswagen 'begins' - here!

There have been many occasions for celebration since Chattanoogans first got the good news that Volkswagen had decided to build its $1 billion automobile production plant here.

Then this week came the official dedication of the VW plant, where cars are already under production.

More than 2,000 employees are ultimately expected to work at the plant, which has the capacity to turn out 150,000 Passats a year.

Volkswagen hopes the Passat will help it gain a larger share of the auto market.

VW Chief Executive Martin Winterkorn certainly could not have been welcomed more enthusiastically by those at the dedication on Tuesday.

Their excitement surely is shared by all of the people of our community.

The challenge now is to make all of the VW "dreams come true" - for the company, for its employees, for our area as a whole and for all the customers who will buy, drive and enjoy the Chattanooga-made cars.
