Israel's right to exist

It is obvious after decades of trying that there is no easy way to bring peace to the Middle East. Some unjustly blame that on Israel.

But the fact is, there are severe enmities even between majority-Muslim nations of the Middle East - and those enmities have nothing to do with Israel.

At any rate, part of what makes it so hard to promote peace in that troubled region is that a number of Muslim countries not only have sharp disagreements with Israel, but they do not respect its basic right to exist. They quite literally believe - as Iran's President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad put it - that Israel should be wiped off the map. They even teach that thinking to their children in schools.

We certainly don't say that the quest for peace should be abandoned, but it's hard to see how it will be productive while that attitude prevails.
