New York bomb plot foiled

The reality of terrorist threats against the United States hit home once again with a recent arrest in New York City.

An alleged sympathizer with the al-Qaida terrorist network was arrested Saturday before he could carry out plots to bomb New York police cars, postal facilities and American troops returning from overseas duty, Mayor Michael Bloomberg said.

"He appears to be a total lone wolf," Bloomberg said.

The suspect, a U.S. citizen originally from the Dominican Republic, was accused of possessing an "explosive substance" that he planned to use to terrorize the public.

We are grateful that the authorities may have headed off attacks in New York. But we are reminded of the very real threat of terrorism, and of the need to be vigilant against it.
