7 shooting deaths at a college

College ideally is a place where young people enjoy learning in a safe and happy environment. So it is shocking and dismaying that seven young people were killed and three others wounded in a wild shooting tragedy at Oikos University at Oakland, Calif.

A former student was arrested and told police he was upset about being expelled from the school this year, according to The Associated Press.

"It's going to take us a few days to put the pieces together," the local police chief said.

It is horrifying to think of so many young lives terribly lost. The student victims reportedly were lined up against a wall and shot "execution style" -- in contrast with the expectation they would be uplifted in happy, rather than tragic, circumstances.

There was no reasonable way to anticipate, to defend against, and to avoid such a horrible and inexplicable tragedy of mass homicide.

The sickening results will continue to be sadly far reaching.
