Who among us can even imagine the horror we would feel if we were the parents and our 3-year-old little boy were in a car that was carjacked at a convenience store?
Just consider the possible terrible ending.
But think about what happened in Colorado Springs, Colo.
A father stopped at a convenience store while he was headed home from a family gathering. As he was out of his car momentarily, someone jumped into his car and drove away - with his little boy inside.
The shocked father chased his car down the street. Friends joined in a chase of about 10 blocks before the car got out of sight.
But then came a 2:15 a.m. knock Sunday on a stranger's door. Traci Gilbert answered the door.
There, standing in front of her, she discovered the toddler, who said: "Help me. I'm cold."
The little boy reportedly was covered with snow and sleet, wearing a diaper and a thin jacket.
"He wasn't crying," Gilbert said. "He never shed a tear the whole time. That boy is a hero to me."
The little child had made it up 14 slick steps to the front door of a two-story duplex, and was carrying a plastic bag, with a container of soy milk, a cup, two diapers, wipes and pajama bottoms.
Fortunately, the little child apparently was no worse for the horrible experience when he was returned to his parents.
Fortunately, this horror story had a happy ending.
But doesn't that remind us all: Never leave a child unattended in a car, anywhere, for even a moment.
