If anything makes the bloody crackdown against protesters in Syria even more tragic, it is the fact that some Syrians have hoped in vain that the U.N. will somehow rescue them.
Thousands of Syrians have died, and the United States has closed its embassy in Syria. Yet despite condemnations from the U.N., President Bashar Assad remains in power. A recent U.N. resolution would have asked him to step down, but Russia and Communist China vetoed it. So the oppression goes on.
That shows again that different countries have different priorities -- and will not necessarily pull together for the sake of human rights simply because they are U.N. members.
