A diamond ring and a dedicated Walker County, Ga., teacher

It is no secret that teachers often dip into their own funds to provide extras - and at times even some essentials - to students in their classrooms.

So we can't say it is surprising that an art teacher at Ridgeland High School in Walker County, Ga., recently sold a diamond ring that she won in a raffle to buy equipment for her classroom. It is, however, highly admirable that she would do so.

Erika Couey won the ring, which is set in 14-karat white gold and has 2.5 carats' worth of diamonds, in a raffle designed to help the school's band buy uniforms. Her first thought was of selling the ring so she could buy a kiln for her ceramics class at Ridgeland High. And that's what she did. The high bid was $2,600, and the money will help make the purchase.

We commend Couey's generosity - as well as the generosity of the anonymous donor of the ring. Both have set a shining example for students.
