Chattanooga City Councilman Chris Anderson goes on Twitter attack after Orlando shooting
In the wake of the worst mass shooting in U.S. history at a gay nightclub in Orlando, Fla., the last thing cyberspace needed was more hate. But Chattanooga City Councilman Chris Anderson poured it on Sunday. He unleashed tweets targeting Tennessee Gov. Bill Haslam, Tennessee Lt. Gov. Ron Ramsey, Tennessee House Speaker Beth Harwell, Tennessee Sens. Todd Gardenhire and Bo Watson, and Chattanooga Commissioner Larry Grohn, among others, asking if they regret their "hateful attacks on the LGBT community" and their incitement of the Orlando violence.
It was unclear what "hateful attacks" the Democrat had in mind, but after three years as an elected representative, he should know the difference between political opposition and hate.
His Twitter barrage is unbecoming of any elected official, especially one who is openly gay and often calls for tolerance on issues involving homosexuality.
While the District 7 councilman's freedom of speech is inviolate, his temperament over the tweets must be called into question. If he cannot express the outrage and disgust Americans feel over such an act in a proper manner and respond with the sympathy and love we all have for the victims and their families, how can we trust him to make rational decisions on local issues involving Chattanooga residents and taxpayer dollars?
We urge him to apologize.
