I have never knowingly met UTC basketball coach, John Shulman, and do not think I would recognize him if we were to share a phone booth. But I am certain that I can make two statements about his condition.
At no time in the recent past did John Shulman take an overdose of stupid pills. Nor did he have his brain removed by aliens.
He did have his share of unfortunate experiences during the 2011-12 basketball season, but he doesn't deserve to be put into the lame duck status awarded to Coach Rodney Allison a couple of years ago for the performance, or lack thereof, of his football staff and players. Even Vince Lombardi and John Wooten had a bad year or two.
CARL K. HANSEN
In reading the Times Free Press for nine years, I have noticed that when a political issue embarrasses the conservatives, the Free Press editor is typically silent on the issue. He either lacks the fortitude to tell the truth as he sees it or the conviction of his beliefs.
He has been silent on mountaintop removal, which would bring jobs and economic prosperity to Tennessee, yet he is loud and clear about building a pipeline from Canada to Louisiana.
It seems to me the potential for environmental degradation is about the same in both instances. But mountaintop removal would degrade the environment very close to the editor's home, and the proposed pipeline, were it built, would be out of the editor's sight.
Could the editor be a closeted NIMBY?
If you have drunk the "Kool-aid" and simply must vote for Obama to have a second term, then vote. I must give you a caveat, however. If he is re-elected, this will probably be the last presidential election in the history of the United States of America.
He has bypassed the Congress and slowly but surely taken away almost all of our rights. His goal is to destroy the U.S.A. and turn us into a socialist/Marxist nation.
