Good Deed: Local students travel to Iowa to promote K-12 computer science education

Last month, Alyssa Malo and Apsara Beard, students at STEM School Chattanooga, went to the National Governors' Association conference in Des Moines, Iowa, to highlight the importance of having computer science education in K-12 classrooms. Malo and Beard spoke with Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe, Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan, Connecticut Gov. Dan Malloy, Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson, and Iowa Gov. Terry Branstad about their experiences and interest in computer science while guiding the governors through some basic coding activities.

Michael Stone, STEM director of innovative learning and a former Albert Einstein Fellow at the National Science Foundation, and Kim Stanley, language arts teacher at STEM School Chattanooga, also spoke. The event was sponsored by the NGA, Code.org and the Computer Science Education Coalition.
