Retirees betrayed over TVA retirement

I, along with many TVA retirees, thought we could count on the income we were promised (an inducement for many to hang on during the turbulent years).

Instead, we see TVA going back on its word.

A former neighbor, a TVA retiree, always said the board and other TVA "powers that be" would love to be able to get their hands on the retirement fund. At this rate, who knows, maybe they will.

I think being disappointed and irate are the feelings of many retirees, but above all, betrayal.

TVA retirees likely shake their heads in disgust when they see the exorbitant salaries of TVA's top executives. Retirees should not suffer because of the Kingston disaster. Did any "heads roll"? Probably not.

'Fourth Estate' failing the people

Where are the members of the "Fourth Estate" when we need them? You know: the media that is supposed to check and balance the three branches of government that are supposed to check and balance each other?

Hear we are in the middle of an exhausting presidential campaign and need all the help we can get.

Moreover, we have a right to expect a functioning, informed Fourth Estate to keep the candidates factually correct and honest.

This means that 24/7 news must be a whole lot more than breaking news that interrupts a dreary repetition of "talking heads" who have not done their homework.

They apparently think that it's enough to drown us with polls and to create "issues" by merely sticking microphones in the faces of self-interested parties and/or self-styled experts to get their "reaction" to the other.

We know better. We have public television and a few like Rachel Maddow who do their homework.

Let's face it. The TV branch of the "Fourth Estate" has quit on us.

Don't forget to plan for bicycle parking

Many visionaries are involved in the re-urbanization of Chattanooga, which continues to garner national accolades.

Our city planners have boldly recognized that bicycles will be a major lifestyle component and are making great strides in anticipating the transition.

However, in the rush to build hundreds of new apartments, building owners and architects have demonstrated a remarkable lack of vision for how their tenants will interact with the rest of their city.

Clean, compact and secure bicycle parking will be in high demand, yet none is being provided!

Traditional bicycle parking is inefficient, intrusive and unsecure.

Chattanooga's new generation of exurbanites will need efficient bike parking, not just at their apartments, but everywhere they travel in our city. Efficient bike parking systems should be integrated into the community.

Let's become more visionary as a bicycle city and provide the efficient bike parking that will be demanded in the years ahead.
