Mohney's inspiring work will be missed

We buried a wonderful inspirator last Sunday. Dr. Nell Mohney went home to heaven at the young age of 94.

She was so many wonderful things to so many people, reaching thousands through her weekly Times Free Press columns, her books and public speaking, among others.

She was my dear friend and Sunday School teacher for 12 years. I enjoyed her friendship, especially in the last two years of her life, and bringing her a chocolate frosty from Wendy's every Wednesday. She so loved them.

She taught us many wonderful things in our class.

I will miss her but I rejoice in her "everlasting life through Christ."

How can Christians vote for Trump?

What happened to the party of "morals and family values?" This has to be the funniest reality show on television. It's comical to watch the "holier than thou" party nominate a man who, when he makes bad business deals, filed for "commercial" bankruptcy four times. When a woman starts to show her age, he will divorce her and start all over with a younger woman.

Why didn't Ivana and Marla Maples speak at his convention?

I can't believe anyone who claims to be a "Christian" could vote for a man so full of hate. Didn't Jesus try to teach us to love your fellow man, even if they aren't the same color or in the same tax bracket?

I think if Jesus were here today, he would tell us to take care of the less fortunate around the world, not wall them out or refuse them because of the color of their skin.

'Special Reports' are overdone

I am sick and tired of television networks interrupting the programming of their affiliates with "Special Reports" which contain only old news and platitudes.

On July 18, I was watching an episode of Crime Watch when it was interrupted by a special report featuring statements by Louisiana Gov. John Edwards and law enforcement officials of the state and the city of Baton Rouge about the killings of three patrol officers.

Nothing new was said. There was no concern over finding accomplices as the shooter acted alone. All of this could have waited to the 6:30 p.m. national news telecast. I am angry at both the network and local affiliate.

I planned for three days to view a particular report on Crime Watch.

Film is a must-see for everyone

The documentary movie "Hillary's America" by Dinesh D'Souza and Jonah Goldberg is absolutely excellent!

It is filled with indisputable facts about America's heritage, giving the viewer great insight of why things happened the way they did. The history of slavery and woman's suffrage (the right to vote) in America is well documented, legally and socially. The film also explains why Russia now owns more than 20 percent of our uranium deposits, and how foreign countries have influenced our politics. And, you need to stay to the very end of the showing to see the terminal message.

Granted, the movie has a Republican slant. If a Democrat viewer can overlook the political view, she or he can learn a lot of American history in one hour and 40 minutes - and for less than $20. It is a real bargain!

I strongly urge all Americans, especially black Americans who want to understand more about the history of slavery, to see "Hillary's America" before it leaves Chattanooga. Enjoy the candy, drinks and popcorn.

Look in one place for answers

We believe the answer to all of the chaos in the world is a simple one.

What did most of the world do when 9/11 happened? The churches were packed out. Christ is the answer, the only answer to the killings and turning this great nation around. Not politicians nor a single man. Only Christ. He died for all. He loves us no matter what if we will repent and turn from our sins. Read II Chronicles 7:14 and John 3:16.

Schools' Bible ed funding troubling

I am deeply troubled by the news that Hamilton County Schools will receive nearly $1 million for a Bible history program. The Bible is not a history book. The fact that it serves as the text for the class casts serious doubt on the academic nature of the curriculum. Indeed, the testimonials on the Bible in the School's website shows that this is not about history, but proselytizing.

Readers of this newspaper are well aware that there are so many other ways $1 million would be better spent in schools. If students wish to learn about Bible history, perhaps they can go to church. Hamilton County has plenty.

Equally troubling is the assertion that the money reflects the desires of "churches" and "businesses." Neither of those entities ought to determine what is appropriate in education. One wants your soul, the other wants your wallet. For that reason alone they are disqualified from making pedagogical decisions.

A program such as this may be legal (a point made on the Bible in the Schools website), but it is not right.

Trump hijacking Grand Old Party

Donald Trump has hijacked the Republican Party. Influential Republicans like Paul Ryan and Bob Corker have sold their souls to "The Donald" for their own personal ambitions. The party of Lincoln, Eisenhower and Reagan is in danger of becoming the party of Trump.

All semblance of the once Grand Old Party is on very shaky ground. Many outstanding Republicans such as Ted Cruz, John Kasich and the Bush family have shown courage, integrity and fortitude by refusing to endorse Trump.

True Republicans who dislike Trump but cannot bring themselves to vote for a Democrat, especially Hillary, would better serve their country if they just go fishing on Election Day.

Park doesn't need Heritage Center

I have little enthusiasm for the proposed Medal of Honor Heritage Center at Coolidge Park.

I appreciate the scale, which is small enough to avoid obstructing views for me and my neighbors. However, that is where my enthusiasm ends. You are depriving the public of an area used constantly and one of the few open spaces in the downtown area. I see it used nearly every day for picnicking, badminton, volleyball, tag football and many other games.

I am also disappointed that our progressive city would allow a poor knock-off of the Jefferson Memorial be built on their land. If it must be there, place it at the edge of the sidewalk, make it two stories high and give them a plot of land no larger than its footprint.

Build Heritage Center at Coolidge

My wife and I very strongly support building the Medal of Honor Heritage Center across from the Chattanooga Theatre Center.

We feel that this center not only would be a tribute to one man, but also to the sacrifices that so many have made to make our country great.

We go through the park area on a regular basis. The arguments about preserving green spaces are ludicrous.

The location is at the very corner of the park with a footprint of only 4,000 square feet. The great open space that is so widely used and enjoyed is actually on the other side of the Walnut Street bridge between the carousel and the river. The most immediate "neighbor" to the site is a parking lot which, presumably, would be utilized as visitor parking for the center. The entire riverfront vista will still be preserved and totally undisturbed.

Chattanoogans are noted for their patriotic spirit and support of our armed forces. This heritage center would be a very meaningful anchor to the Northshore.

It would be a constant reminder to our children and grandchildren of what so many have done before them.
