Protesters' fears have basis in fact

In response to a recent letter asking for healing, the writer implies the losing side should just accept the Republican view, when in fact Trump lost the popular vote.

They only represent 47.4 percent of the voters. This election was won by a coalition of misinformed and/or ignorant voters.

They elected an individual who is a blatant liar, encourages violence against his opponents and thinks it's okay to use his wealth and power to do what he pleases.

This coupled with a proud advocate for anti-gay laws and extreme restrictions on women's rights is vice president. They are followed by hypocritical, regressive lawmakers who will be framing our laws for the next four years and beyond when the Supreme Court nomination is considered.

Is it any wonder people are scared and protesting the prospect of being governed by this group of Neanderthals? Our fears are well founded.

It is the letter writer who has verbalized a serious lack of truth and understanding.

The cause of the division in the country wasn't the Obama administration but the extremely narrow-minded, backward thinking of the right wing conservatives in power for the last several years.

Trump will need checks and balances

Getting out of bed on Wednesday morning, I already knew the results. About 50 percent of the voting population felt that Mr. Trump was worthy of our highest position; I was not one of them.

I grew up in the New York metro area and witnessed Mr. Trump's ascendency to the elites via his real estate and gambling dealings. And now, he is the face of our nation.

I have friends and loved ones who voted for him. They remain friends and loved ones always.

So my only recourse is to hope that as president, Mr. Trump will be subject to sufficient checks and balances to sustain environmental concerns, keep international relationships intact, allow decisions about personal lifestyles to be respected and exhibit some common sense.

I pray for the country and the world. The presidency is not a day job nor one subject to personal whims.

Education is failing country's students

Based on recent events, I will have to add to some of my words Tyler Jett printed in his Sunday post-election article.

Yes, I still do believe many parents are leaving the raising and disciplining of their children to the schools; however, it has come out that schools are letting kids out of school in order to demonstrate against Trump's election. Shame on you!

Most of our tax money is supposedly going toward our children's education, and many are going into debt to obtain a college degree.

I resent children being given extra credit for demonstrating and for missing day(s) to demonstrate. This is not the reason we send our children to school, which is why I am totally in favor of homeschooling and not wasting our tax money on a public school system.

What country are we living in? This is not the America of our forefathers.

The school administrators should be held accountable and fired, and reins should be drawn tighter. God help us.
