Give Joe Smith your vote on Nov. 8

Although most letters to the editor relate to a very troubled national election, you can actually feel sure you are making the right choice in our local election by voting for Joe Smith.

He is running as an independent for the Hamilton County Commission seat vacated by Marty Haynes.

Joe cares about people, not politics. He is a conservative who believes he can accomplish his greatest wish - to improve schools and continue to save the young people of Chattanooga, just like he has been doing for the past 15 years as originator and facilitator of YCAP, the organization that has saved hundreds of young people who are headed in the wrong direction. Now you can make a difference! Vote for Joe!

Times' commentary perpetuates tax myth

David Leonhardt in his Chattanooga Times commentary on Wednesday about corporate taxes states that corporate taxes are ultimately paid by "the well-off because they own the most stock."

This is a myth. Corporate taxes are just like any other expense to a corporation, and they are added into the price of the corporation's products. We all understand that a large share of the price of the gasoline we buy is taxes. There's a sticker on the pump that says so. Does the retailer pay the tax out of his profits? No, he collects the tax from the customer and remits it to the government. There is no mystery in this process. It is the same with all business taxes.

When the cost of producing a product increases, the price of the product must increase to pay for it. When government imposes a tax on a corporation (or any other kind of business for that matter), the tax is paid by whoever buys that corporation's products. Corporations don't pay taxes; they collect them from their customers. In the end, it is the customer who actually pays the tax.

I am writing about Wednesday's article, "Early Voting Begins." I am so happy that the TFP put this article on the front page of the newspaper. Some newspapers put voting information in a section in the back, but I like how you put it front and center, which encourage voter participation.

Trump's immigration policy is harmful

Monday's page one story, "Farmers divided over immigration," talked about how many farmers don't want to vote for Donald Trump because they need immigrants to work on their farms.

One guy said that almost all of his workers are immigrants from Mexico. I completely agree that there shouldn't be a wall built or that Trump shouldn't try to deport the legal immigrants. Farms thrive off of the labor of immigrants because they're some of the few people willing to work on a farm.

People should listen to what Trump is saying about immigration. Even if illegal immigrants are negatively affecting American society, it's going to be a lot worse if Trump became president and tried to get them all out.
