Mitchell will advocate for district in 2nd term

I want to thank my fellow residents of District 2 for honoring me with your vote. I was deeply moved by your overwhelming vote of confidence on March 7 and humbled for the opportunity to serve another term on the Chattanooga City Council.

I am also immensely grateful to my family, friends and loyal supporters who so generously contributed their time and efforts to our campaign during the past six months. To the so many who volunteered, knocked on doors, made phone calls or helped in other ways, big and small, please know your efforts and hard work ensured our victory on election day.

Yes, our city will face many challenges and opportunities in the coming years. I am sure, together, we will build a stronger community, with safer neighborhoods, improved infrastructure, better economic opportunities for all families and businesses, as well as more openness and efficiency from our government.

I will continue to bring common sense, fiscally responsible decision-making and leadership to our partnership.

This is a commitment to you as your trusted servant, dedicated advocate and passionate voice on the City Council.

Robinson perfectly outlines path forward

The Sunday Perspective front commentary by District 4 Board of Education representative Tiffanie Robinson was excellent - reality based and forward thinking.

The County Commission and school board either need to do what's right or admit defeat, and then we should all accept that Hamilton County will have lousy public schools and awful school buildings.

Yes, the program needs more money - there is no argument. With our current resources, we cannot resolve the problems of underpaid teachers and broken down school buildings. The schools are just like everything else, you most often get what you pay for.

If we have elected officials who will focus most on doing what they were elected to do, which in this case involves raising taxes rather than the next election, we can start making progress for our school children. As Ms. Robinson points out, low taxes are a draw to businesses, but underperforming schools are not.

I'm 65, have no children or grandchildren in the school system, but I am still a strong supporter of raising taxes to support our schools.

Are we now headed to single-payer system?

There is only one way to lower health costs and make health care insurance truly affordable to the vast majority of American families.

Former Rep. Michele Bachmann has the answer: "All the federal government needs to do after repealing Obamacare is to pass a bill that allows any health insurance product to be sold across state lines with no minimum federal mandates. Period."

Health care for the uninsurable and the needy should be handled as a separate problem. As long as a Trumpcare, Ryancare, GOPcare, or whatevercare mandates the insurance industry to cover uninsurables, costs will be unaffordable.

The authors of Obamacare have admitted the Affordable Care Act was created to lead to a single-payer health care system with government being in total control. Can you say VA health care?
