Bring back federal assault weapons ban

A ranter in a recent Sunday edition was like so many others these days - positing that the lack of Bible in schools is the reason we're having so many mass school shootings. His zinger was: "Where is right vs. wrong being taught?"

I can come up with two places pretty quickly where right vs. wrong being taught is more appropriate - home and church. Haven't we turned over enough of our responsibilities as parents to our school systems and educators? Then we castigate them when they teach our little darlings something about which we disagree.

Now we're wanting to turn these educators into Rambos, arming them to the teeth. What a heavy load to carry if the teacher survived a shootout but discovered some of his bullets killed one or more students.

Using the ranter's similar logic, how many mass murders with assault rifles did we have while the Federal Assault Weapons Ban was law and how many have occurred since it expired in 2004? Bring back the law, I say. Saving the life of one precious child would be worth it.

Considering pro-life or pro-choice

I have found myself pondering whether I was pro-life or pro-choice. As a Christian male, I believe aborting a child is a terribly difficult decision to make.

Whether being pro-choice is morally wrong depends on what you consider being living. Does life start at conception, when your heart starts beating or when you cry with your first breath of fresh air? I believe any mammal with a beating heart should be considered alive, which for humans is as few as three weeks after conception.

Another controversy dealing with abortion is who gets to make the decision to abort the baby. Liberals say that because it is a woman's body, it should be her decision. I, however, could not disagree more.

When both would-be-parents are together, I think it is irresponsible to leave the fate of a child to one parent. Not to mention the fact the woman is pregnant and has more hormones running through her than ever before. The baby was made by two people, and it will be raised by two people should it be born.

It is selfish to think of yourself ahead of the child growing inside of you.

Our reps need to oppose Trump

Alexander, Corker & Fleischmann:

How long will you condone Dopey Donnie's insane circus of dishonest chaos on the national and world stage? (Not to mention campaigning for another term when he has never competently taken up the administrative responsibilities of this term.) Not to mention flagrant financial misconduct and total lack of personal discretion. Not to mention NRA money.

Did you ever/do you now have any sense of truth and integrity as our representatives who should take a clear and specific and consistent stand against this "moron," to quote Secretary Tillerson (allegedly).

I'm certainly not relying on you cats to change your spots, so I have become, with many others, in my 70s a lifelong Democrat-turned-committed activist. It is the least we can do to fulfill our government duties as citizens.

Gentlemen, November is coming to the Republican Party. So this may be the last chance for the three of you to be, as it is said, on the right side of history. Let your final legacy be to make Tennessee proud.
