White grateful for voter support

I would like to express my heartfelt thanks to everyone who came out and voted for me. I am pleased and proud of this campaign. We fought hard and above board.

Never forget that even in defeat, victory still lies. Just as Jesus seemingly died on the cross, his resurrection was a victory cry for those of us who have received him as our savior.

I wish to congratulate Judge Kyle Hedrick. As I stated before, he will serve our county well.

Walton, TFP lauded for Bradley coverage

I would like to thank Judy Walton and the Times Free Press for their tireless investigations of the Sheriff Department of Bradley County.

Because of your perseverance, many of the illegal, unethical and questionable practices of the current administration were brought to light.

Many times the paper was attacked for its coverage. Thank you for not bowing to the pressure to suspend the investigations.

Continue the great work.

Not all of our college professors lean left

I read so many complaints about liberal college professors. Interestingly, some of those complaints come from conservative college professors who are also columnists on our "right side."

I was shocked, shocked, to read in a May 1 TFP article ("Documents show ties between university, conservative donors") that not only are there conservative professors - as suspected - but they are put in place, in this instance, by right-wing libertarian, global-warming denying, fossil fuel billionaires.

How does this work? The Koch Foundation places members on an advisory board at George Mason University that has the right to hire (and fire) professors at the university's Mercatus Center, a free-market think tank. The Koch members of the advisory board constitute only 40 percent of the board but that is a force hard to ignore and, if overridden, may cause next year's money to not show up.

Through the device of funding teaching positions, similar things can happen all over the country, including (I believe) our own local university.

I used to feel a bit sorry for conservative parents who send their charges off to be battered by all those liberal professors. It turns out that I worried in vain.

Politicians called on to settle disputes

I heard something that really disturbed and upset this mother's heart:

Two fine young men I know are planning on joining the armed forces now so that they may choose which branch of services they want - not one they are sent to when Trump gets us in a war - not if we have a war but when.

It hurts me that our innocent young men and women are facing up to a responsibility that is so uncalled for.

We need politicians who are working for peaceful settlements of all this nonsense going on in our nation and our world to stand up and be the politicians we were promised before they were elected.
