There are lots of troubling problems with the growing expenses of the federal government's Medicare program,
It's a $60 billion federal insurance program that seeks to help nearly 27 million Americans 65 years old and older pay with medical care insurance through deductions from their Social Security retirement checks.
The government's Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services makes contracts with private insurance companies for the health care coverage. But the inspector general for the Department of Health and Human Services has reported that audits indicate participating insurance companies have charged several billion dollars too much in the prescription drug program.
Thus both taxpayers and those having Social Security deductions are the losers.
When government, billions of dollars, millions of people and private insurers are involved in a program, it is a daunting challenge to assure that services are provided efficiently, with fair prices, reasonable taxpayer costs and a minimum of costly bureaucracy.
