Council goes from holiday to work on city budget

City Council members came back from the July Fourth holiday weekend and hopped right back into dealing with the city 2010-11 budget.

Councilwoman Carol Berz, chairwoman of the Budget, Finance and Personnel Committee, looked at council members and told them she had a wonderful weekend.

"I didn't even check my e-mail," she said. "I don't even know if I got threatened."

Councilwoman Sally Robinson immediately responded.

"I can promise you, you got threatened," she said.

TO SPEAK OR NOT TO SPEAK?

As the council started its budget meeting Tuesday, several business owners and residents showed up to speak about issues pertaining to them.

Councilwoman Berz first told audience members it was not a public hearing so she wanted to limit discussion. But some council members objected.

"Do you want to hear them speak?" Dr. Berz asked the council.

"I don't want to sit here looking at each other," Councilman Jack Benson responded.
