NASHVILLE - State Rep. Andy Holt's plans to take a state-mandated test alongside eighth-grade students in a classroom in Obion County Friday were blocked, he said, by the school district's administration.

Holt, R-Dresden, announced Thursday he planned to take the practice exam for the new TNReady eighth-grade English language arts test at Hillcrest Elementary School, in response to what he said were complaints from teachers about its content.

But Friday morning, Holt said state Education Commissioner Candice McQueen contacted him and discouraged him from going. He said he declined the commissioner's request but soon got a call from the Obion County Schools administration informing him that he would not be allowed to take the test at the school.
