Corker worried Turkey becoming more 'autocratic'

CLEVELAND - Even though Turkish leaders quashed a weekend coup attempt, Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman Bob Corker doesn't think the country is headed in a safer direction.

Instead, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan is responding to the coup by pushing the country in a direction that's "concerning," Corker said this week before an event at the Republican National Convention.

"What I worry about now is he becomes even more autocratic. In other words, he's doing a lot with judges right now, he's been tough with the media. And my concern now - I'm glad the coup wasn't successful, that's not a good thing - but I'm concerned that he moves more forcefully into an autocratic way and more Islamic in nature," Corker said. "And I hope we're going to be able to more fully influence that not happening, but it's concerning."
