Mocs very aware of season opener

The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga football team didn't lack for motivation during their workouts this summer, as sophomore running back J.J. Jackson pointed out Thursday. The Sept. 4 season opener against Appalachian State provided more than enough.

"It was the first thing that crossed our minds," Jackson said. "That's what we're looking forward to, and that's the only game we see right now."

The Mocs opened the 2009 season, Russ Huesman's first as their coach, against Division II member Glenville State. ASU's Mountaineers, winners of five straight Southern Conference titles, will be a much tougher challenge.

"I really like it because we have something exciting right at the beginning," senior right guard T.J. Hurless said.

The UTC marketing and promotions department soon will turn up the heat on season-ticket sales, as well as sales for the Appalachian State game. Athletic director Rick Hart said the department is working on "20 for 20,000," meaning 20 promotions to help put 20,000 fans in the stands for the opener.

Hart said a "white out" is planned for the game. The Mocs will wear all-white uniforms and fans are encouraged to wear white clothing as well.

Walk-on suspended

Walk-on offensive lineman Tucker Cathey of Franklin, Tenn., has been suspended from the team and won't participate in preseason practice, Huesman said. Cathey, 20, was arrested in Chattanooga on July 24 and charged with disorderly conduct and drinking under age.

"He's suspended, and whether he comes back on the team or not is based on whether he does the things we're going to ask him to do," Huesman said.

Cathey is a redshirt sophomore who has not played in a game and isn't expected to this season. He is scheduled to appear in court on Aug. 12.

Extra points

Junior safety Chris Lewis-Harris (foot) and freshman offensive lineman Devin Caldwell (knee) did not practice Thursday. Junior defensive tackle Nick Craig (foot) sat out most of practice, and junior left guard Omre Harris (shoulder) went through limited repetitions. ... Huesman said he was impressed by how quickly transfer safety Jarrett Burns picked up the defense.
