Red Bank's Williams commits to UTC

The two-star rated running back had been previously committed to MTSU.

Just about the only thing missing from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga football team's group of commitments before Sunday was a running back. That's no longer the case.

Red Bank all-state back Keon Williams committed to the Mocs on Sunday after taking an official visit Saturday. Williams had previously committed to Middle Tennessee State, however they parted ways earlier this month.

After MTSU rescinded its offer -- Williams said the Blue Raiders couldn't wait for him to meet all the necessary academic benchmarks, which he's confident he will do -- Tennessee Tech and UTC showed the most interest in him.

"UTC had what I was looking for," Williams said. "I could see myself playing for them more than Tennessee Tech, so I chose UTC."

Williams, who has a two-star Rivals.com rating, ran for 1,506 yards and 32 touchdowns, and averaged 8.4 yards per carry in his only season at Red Bank. After transferring from North Carolina to live with his brother prior to his junior season, he was ruled ineligible by the TSSSA's transfer rule, which forced him to sit out all of 2008.

He made the most of his one season, helping Red Bank go undefeated in the regular season and reach the quarterfinals of the Class 4A playoffs. Williams was one of five Red Bank players to earn all-state honors, including fellow UTC commitment safety Keith Mayes.

Mayes, who committed nearly two months ago, did his best to steer Williams toward the Mocs.

"When I was on my visit to Tech, he was calling me and texting me," Williams said. "He was real happy and excited when I told him (Sunday) that I was committing to UTC."

Williams is the 13th high school senior to commit to UTC, and likely the last addition to the recruiting class, which also includes transfers Chris Donald and Nick Davison. National signing day is Wednesday.
