Georgia signs power forward

Marcus Thornton, a 6-foot-8, 215-pound power forward from Atlanta Westlake, signed Wednesday with Georgia.

Thornton averaged 23.5 points and 12.1 rebounds in leading Westlake to the AAAAA state title game and signed with Clemson in November before receiving his release last month following the departure of Tigers coach Oliver Purnell to DePaul. Rivals.com ranks Thornton as the No. 26 power forward nationally and No. 121 overall.

"He is a terrific basketball player, a great student and an outstanding young man," Bulldogs coach Mark Fox said. "He's a winner in every way."

Thornton is the fourth signee in Georgia's 2010 class, joining 6-8 forward Cady Lalanne of Orlando, 6-9 forward Donte Williams of Ellenwood, Ga., and 6-2 guard Sherrard Brantley of Dublin, Ga.
