Lee back in World Series

The Lee University baseball team is heading to the NAIA World Series for the fourth time in Mark Brew's four seasons as head coach, and Tennessee Wesleyan is one win away from the Lewiston, Idaho, event.

Fourth-ranked Lee wrapped up the Opening Round it hosted in Cleveland by beating William Jewell 9-6 on Thursday night, while Wesleyan continued its rebound from an opening loss to Southern Polytechnic in Columbus, Ga., by edging the Hornets 5-4. The Bulldogs and Hornets play again today to see who moves on.

JJ Costantino was 3-for-4 and scored twice along with Tanner Moore and courtesy runner Ross Collins for Lee, while Moore and Jose Cuevas each was 2-for-4 with two RBIs and Michael Brown also had two hits for the Flames (49-11). Cuevas homered.

Ryan Santos tripled, doubled and drove in two runs and Cody Gaskill doubled twice in TWC's Wednesday night win over Indiana Tech, and Gaskill and Jonathan Smith had three hits each as the Bulldogs rallied to eliminate top-seeded LSU-Shreveport in Thursday's first game, 6-5. With the score tied 4-4, Smith doubled to lead off the ninth and went to third on a Gaskill flyout, and Rafael Carlot followed an intentional walk to Max Loveland with a two-run triple.

Justin Crowell, who came in to pitch in the fourth inning, gave up a homer in the bottom of the ninth but closed out the win. Then the Bulldogs got another ninth-inning win against Southern Poly on Rafael Carlot's third hit of the game, plating Gaskill. Brad Pippa had two hits.

Lady Flames win

DECATUR, Ala. -- Johana Gomez homered and pitched a nine-hitting four-hitter with 14 strikeouts as Lee University edged Notre Dame (Ohio) 4-2 in the first day of pool play in the NAIA softball tournament.

Caitlin Haley was 2-for-4 with an RBI, Krista Goodlet and Tabitha Farrow also had RBIs and Savanna Bell was 2-for-5 for the Lady Flames (56-4), who scored three runs in the ninth.

Lady Tigers win, lose

ST. GEORGE, Utah -- Leah Kelley's three-run homer keyed a six-run sixth inning as Chattanooga State rallied to defeat Odessa (Texas) 6-2 in the NJCAA Division I national softball tournament Thursday, and she had three homers with all four RBIs in a 10-4 loss to Chipola in round two.

Whitney Galloway walked to begin and end the six-run surge that carried Haley Workman to a three-hit pitching win for the Lady Tigers. Kelley, Workman and Brittany Cooley each was 2-for-3 and Kendall Bruning was 2-for-4.
