Shorter holds off Wesleyan, 9-8

Visiting Shorter University edged Tennessee Wesleyan 9-8 in baseball Tuesday in Athens, Tenn.

The Hawks weathered a three-run ninth inning by the host Bulldogs that included a run scoring on what would've been a game-ending strikeout. It went as a wild pitch, and Michael Whiteford followed with an RBI walk and Ryan Santos added a run-scoring single but with the tying run thrown out at the plate.

Rafael Carlot was 3-for-4 with two doubles and two RBIs and Cody Gaskill was 3-for-5 for Wesleyan, ranked 25th in the NAIA, and Whiteford had two RBIs. Catcher Carlot's courtesy runner, Tanner Quirk, stole three bases.

Blake McCullers drove in three runs for the Hawks, and Clint Harkins was 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored.

Covenant's scheduled game Tuesday night at Oglethorpe was pushed back to tonight at 7
