Ronrico White commits to play at UTC

Former NBA and University of Tennessee guard Tony White's first son played at the College of Charleston.

Another son will play for the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga.

Ronrico White has give a verbal commitment to begin his college basketball career this fall in McKenzie Arena.

"Coach [John] Shulman did the recruiting and he didn't send an assistant, and that was a factor," said White, who chose UTC over Radford, Eastern Kentucky and Charleston Southern. "Coach [Bobby] Cremins didn't recruit me so College of Charleston wasn't a factor."

White is a 6-foot-3, 165-pound wing who averaged 14.7 points and 2.5 assists per game while shooting 49 percent from the floor, 33 percent from beyond the 3-point line and 75 percent from the free-throw line for Bearden High which went 35-3 and reached the Class AAA state championship.

"He's a great leader, he's a student of the game, a gym-rat and he's an ideal player," Bearden coach Mark Blevins said of the left-handed player. "He has endless energy and endless effort."

The Bulldogs went 136-13 during the four years in which White played for Blevins.

"'Rico is much bigger and stronger than Tony, and he can put the ball on the floor but he's more of a wing than Tony," Blevins said. "He's a really good 3-point shooter. He's the whole package, but no doubt, he still needs to work on his game."

The Mocs, who finished last season 16-16 overall and 12-6 in the SoCon with a share of the North Division title, have two scholarships to offer for next season, barring any unforseen departures.

"I have one goal and that's to make it to the NCAA tournament and to take this program as far as possible," White said. "I don't want to sound cocky, but I like to win and that's what drives me."
