Mocs' Robinson gets wideout work

Terrell Robinson is in a battle with Graham Nichols to be the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga's backup quarterback. Regardless of whether he wins the job, the redshirt freshman from South Pittsburg likely will get on the field a lot this season.

Robinson played quite a few snaps at quarterback during the Mocs' 108-play scrimmage at Finley Stadium on Friday. But he played even more at wide receiver.

"They just threw me in," he said.

The 6-foot-3, 195-pound Robinson was 1-for-3 passing and had five receptions for 42 yards. The subject of using him as a receiver had been considered, but during the Mocs' first nine preseason practices he'd hardly lined up out wide.

"I ran two routes yesterday, and that was just in [pass skeleton] because everybody was tired," Robinson said. "Next thing you know, I'm out here today."

Robinson is one of the best athletes on the team and presents a big target as a receiver. Mocs coach Russ Huesman said the 2009 Class 1A state back of the year needs to be on the field.

"If he's the second-team quarterback, it makes no sense for him to be standing right next to [offensive coordinator] Marcus Satterfield on the sideline when he's a good, good football player," Huesman said.

Pollard perfect

As the UTC offense struggled to finish drives, kicker Nick Pollard kept running on and off the field. The redshirt freshman went 6-for-6 on field goals, connecting from 47, 44 and 39 yards as well as three times inside 30 yards.

"It felt good to make everything and to be back out here," said Pollard, who missed last season with a leg injury.

Extra points

Several Mocs, including All-America receiver Joel Bradford, sat out the scrimmage with injuries, and starting defensive end Davis Tull had to come out with a hand/wrist injury. ... Tommy Hudson, Sloan Allison and Jeff Veres each had three receptions.
