Flu bug forces postponement of UTC-Western Carolina game

The flu has forced a postponement of the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga men's basketball game at Western Carolina that was scheduled to be played Thursday.

UTC officials held a conference this afternoon with representatives of Western Carolina and the Southern Conference and decided to postpone the game until Monday after several UTC players went down with the flow.

"It has decimated us," coach John Shulman said of the illness. "I've never seen anything like it.

The Mocs were down to eight available players due to Jeremy Saffore's illness, Chris Early's suspension and Sam Watson's injury.

Keegan Bell, Omar Wattad and Jeff Smith tested positive for the flu on Wednesday. Results of tests for two others were not available at the start of UTC's scheduled practice.

Only Ricky Taylor, Jahmal Burroughs and Troy Cage were dressed and ready for practice in McKenzie Arena on Wednesday at 3:15 p.m.

"I left practice yesterday really enthused, even though we had only eight players including one post presence," Shulman said. "I thought we'd have a great chance at Western.

"Then the bad news kept coming today."
