Dr Pepper Classic: Islanders hold off Montreat

Montreat made them sweat.

The NAIA school coached by former University of Tennessee at Chattanooga guard Lincoln Walters fell 84-77 to Texas A&M Corpus Christi in the consolation game of the Dr Pepper Classic.

"When Chattanooga beat us, they determined the outcome," Walters said. "Tonight, we determined the outcome and we lost by seven.

"They're long and they jumped over us and the difference was the rebounds and two shots."

Demond Watt led all players with 18 points, Justin Reynolds had 13 points and Hollis HIll added 12 points for the Islanders who out-rebounded Montreat 45-27.

Cameron Hayes led Montreat with 16 points, Daniel Kennedy scored 13 while Matt Rushing and Steve McBorrough added 11 each.

The Cavaliers had never been closer than 18 points in any of their previous six games against NCAA Division I competition.

"It's disappointing," Walters said. "It's a game we should have won."

The Islanders owned a slim 41-36 at halftime thanks to 11 points from Watt.

Montreat pulled within 43-40 on a fast-break layup by Dameron Hayes three minutes into the second half. The Cavs were within five points with 12:45 to go and had several possessions to pull even closer.

But a 14-6 run by the Islanders turned a six-point game into a 78-64 lead with 2:18 to go.

"A win is a win, it's what we wanted and we got it," Corpus Christi coach Perry Clark said. "When we started making shots we were able to pull ahead."
