Lady Mocs post up

As the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga women's basketball team ran around the court at McKenzie Arena late Monday afternoon, it was obvious that the Lady Mocs' roster had experienced a growth spurt.

There are seven Lady Mocs listed at 6-foot or taller on the roster, and that's not including Appalachian State transfer Ashlen Dewart, who has to sit out this season.

Dewart and Tennessee transfer Faith Dupree, who will be eligible in December, are the tallest at 6-foot-3. Whitney Hood, the senior who led the Southern Conference in scoring last season, is 6-2.

"We've got a group of talented post players that's going to do some damage for a lot of years on out," Hood said following UTC's first preseason practice. "We're going to be competing every day in practice, and it's going to make us all better."

Along with Hood, the Lady Mocs feature returning post players in 6-1 Taylor Hall, 6-0 Capriee Tucker and 6-1 Lynette Harris. UTC also has two big freshman forwards in 6-2 Ashley Southern and 6-foot Kayla Freeman.

Coach Wes Moore said this was most likely his tallest team ever, but "maybe the slowest inside." Moore likes for the Lady Mocs to play at a fast pace, but that might not always be possible this season.

"You may get caught having to wait sometimes, but I still would like to see us be able to push it if we've got numbers and see if we can make something happen," Moore said. "With our four-out, one-in [system], Faith and Hoodie are both hard to guard down there on the block and Capriee had a good year down there. I think we'll keep doing what we're doing."

The Lady Mocs open their season against UAB on Nov. 11. They will play an exhibition game against Lee University on Nov. 1.
