Mocs finish sixth in Rees Jones golf

DAUFUSKIE ISLAND, S.C. - The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga men's golf team finished sixth Tuesday in the 13-team Rees Jones Invitational at Haig Point Golf Club with a 54-hole total of 909, 15 shots behind repeat champion Kennesaw State. The Mocs' Stephan Jaeger tied for seventh individually at 6-over-par 222, and Chris Robb tied for 20th at 228. Steven Fox at 230, Benni Weilguni at 233 and Davis Bunn at 234 tied for 30th, 36th and 39th. UTC plays Friday through Sunday in the Brickyard Collegiate Classic in Macon, Ga.

* VESTAVIA HILLS, Ala. -- Middle Tennessee State senior Hunter Green from Rhea County finished in a tie for eighth place at 212 as the Blue Raiders wound up ninth Tuesday in the 12-team Jerry Pate Invitational at 878. Texas won with an 836, 20 shots better than runners-up Alabama and Clemson.

* ROME, Ga. -- With Matt Emery the medalist at 136 and Jeremy Lawson and Hunter Vest sharing sixth place at 146, the Lee University men's golf team won the 19-team Chick-fil-A Invitational tournament Tuesday at Coosa Country Club by 21 strokes with its second straight 286. Tyler Smith and Caleb Roberson shot 148 and 151 for the Flames. Covenant College wound up 18th, led by Alex Mosteller at 153.

* GREENEVILLE, Tenn. -- Led by second-place Courtney Shelton with back-to-back 75s, Lee University won the 15-team NAIA Women's Preview at Link Hills with a 36-hole 617, four clear of runner-up Northwood. The Lady Flames' Sloane Skinner and Madison Alexander tied for fifth at 154, and Kristin Bourg tied for 18th at 159. Tennessee Wesleyan was 12th at 698, with Lexi Stewart tying for 41st at 169 and Stephanie Carr sharing 51st at 172.

Auto Racing

* Doug Hughes from Decatur, Tenn., won the 4.70 Heads Up class and $5,000 Saturday night at the Brainerd Optimist Drag Strip with a 4.71-second run at 149.75 mph in his 1969 Camaro SS powered by a modified 755-cubic-inch Chevrolet engine with injected alcohol and nitrous oxide assist. David Solomon of Spencer earned $1,500 as the runner-up with a 4.72-second run in his '98 Dodge Dakota with a 740 hemi engine. Bud Townsend of Loudon was third. Ruben Prince of South Pittsburg won the 5.70 class with Jerry Wilson of Flintstone, Greg Trew and Josh Cunningham second through fourth, and Heath Littrell and Dereck Pickle won the 6.00 and 7.00 classes with Rick Millard and Chris Turner their runners-up. Nathan Wells of Ringgold won the Foot Brake class with L.C. Bigham second.

Basketball

* Kayla Beavers has followed fellow Bradley Central High School senior Caroline Smith in signing to play basketball for crosstown Lee University. "We watched Kayla's development over the summer," Lee coach Marty Rowe said. "She can shoot the basketball, and as she gets bigger and stronger she will be the real deal." Said Bradley coach Jason Reuter: "Kayla is an all-American girl on and off the court. She's an excellent academic student. She has worked hard in the weight room, and it shows. She's stronger and quicker. If she continues that trend, she'll be an outstanding college player." Beavers has scored more than 1,000 points in two seasons as a Bearettes starter. They won 27 games and reached the Class AAA sectionals last season.

Volleyball

* After going 1-3 in the tournament they hosted this past weekend, the volleyball Lady Crusaders of Tennessee Temple University improved to 9-15 with a 3-0 win Tuesday night against visiting West Georgia Tech.

Baseball

* The Chattanooga Cyclones K baseball team won 2-1 and 4-1 over Huntsville Greenwave Baseball in a weekend doubleheader at Jacksonville (Ala.) State University. Greenwave used aluminum bats while the Cyclones swung wood. Dakota Hudson got the pitching win and Bobby Towne a save in the first game, and McClain Bachus was the winner with Logan Baldwin striking out five batters in three innings for the game-two save. Brent Smith doubled in the first win and had two hits, two runs and an RBI in the rematch, when Lee Gibson doubled and singled. Cody Rhinehart had a hit and a run in each game and Drew Toth had a hit and a run in game one and an RBI along with Austin Morris in game two, when Sheldon Brogden got a hit and scored.
