UTC, UT second in Carpet Capital

The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga has some company at the Carpet Capital Collegiate.

The Mocs are in a three-way tie for second place heading into the final round today at The Farm Golf Club in Rocky Face, Ga.

UTC, Tennessee and Clemson each is at 2-under-par 574 through two rounds. They trail Auburn by five shots.

The Mocs shot 1 under with sophomore Benni Weilguni carding a 5-under 67, which tied for low round of the day. Combined with a first-round 72, Weilguni is tied first individually with Bryden Macpherson of Georgia.

"Benni has been doing things like that. I think he's starting to figure out that he's pretty good," UTC coach Mark Guhne said. "He got a little nervous toward the end, which is to be expected when you have it that deep and haven't done that before."

UTC senior Stephan Jaeger shot a 72 and is tied for third at 140 with Tennessee's Garrick Porteous. Mocs sophomore Davis Bunn is tied for 26th at 147 and junior Steven Fox is tied for 35th at 149.

"We hung in there today and just kind of treaded water," Guhne said. "We got one really good round out of somebody, but we've counted a 75 both days.

"To win this tournament, we'll have to turn a 75 into a 70 or something."

Auburn pulled ahead with a 9-under 279, Niclas Carlsson matching Weilguni's 67.

Alabama is in fifth place at 575. Georgia and Georgia Tech are sixth and seventh in the 12-team field at 582 and 583, followed by LSU at 585.

Jay Vandeventer, like Jaeger a former Baylor School golfer, shot a 69 for Tennessee and is tied for 10th. Former Rhea County standout Hunter Green of Middle Tennessee State is tied for 13th at 143. MTSU's Brett Patterson from McMinnville shares 35th.
