Corey Davis homered twice and brought in five runs as Lee University won 6-3 in NAIA baseball Tuesday at Lebanon, Tenn.
Lee fell from No. 1 in the national rankings to No. 3 but leads the nation in wins with its 36-6-1 record. The Flames scored three runs in the top of the first inning, but Cumberland (20-19) was even after two and relievers Mike Fasolo (2-0), James Rechenbach, Matt Passauer, Andy Hills and Jose Samayoa (fourth save) held the Bulldogs to two hits after that.
Mike Moore was 3-for-5 and Jorge Saez, Max Harvell, Blake Barber and Edmanuel Rivera matched Davis with two hits apiece for Lee. James Fowlkes scored twice as the runner for catcher Saez. Mike Mandarino was 3-for-4 with a homer for Cumberland.
Bryan 5, Southern Polytechnic 4: At Dayton, the host Lions edged the 15th-ranked Hornets (27-14) in the first game of an NAIA nonconference sweep as Doug Stroup went 2-for-2 with two RBIs, Steven Brown and DeWayne were 3-for-3 and 2-for-3 with an RBI apiece and Tyler Latham homered. With Boyd following a Shane Clawson double with an RBI single in the bottom of the seventh, Kenny Knudsen got the pitching win in relief of John Cain for Bryan (31-11).
Stroup was 2-for-2 again in game two, with a homer, three RBIs and three runs scored, and Clawson also homered and drove in three runs while Kevin Layne was 3-for-4 with an RBI and Latham was 2-for-4 and scored two runs. Kemonte Kesee (5-1) pitched a one-hitter with five strikeouts.
Covenant 13, Sewanee 4: At Sewanee, James Rollins was 3-for-5 with two homers and his brother Chris was 2-for-5 with an inside-the-parker as the Scots improved to 13-11, taking advantage of five Tigers errors. David Lockwood was 2-for-4 with two RBI doubles and Kurt Wiles was 2-for-2 with an RBI triple for Covenant. Blake Williams was 3-for-5 and Grant Goodson was 2-for-4 for Sewanee (11-14).
Sewanee rolls twice
The Sewanee softball team scored 11 runs in its first at-bat Tuesday and went on to beat visiting Fisk 20-0 and 18-1. The Tigers (5-10) tallied 14 times in the first inning of the second game.
Michelle Thibodeaux allowed one hit and struck out 14 of the 19 Fisk batters she faced in the first game, when she also homered and drove in four runs and Kayla Sewell and Erin Polena each added three RBIs. Sarah Hamilton and Sewell combined to pitch a three-hitter in game two, and Sewell homered, singled and plated four runs while Carly Warfield added three hits and two RBIs to her two hits in game one.
Lee 8-2, Bryan 1-0: At Cleveland, the 13th-ranked Lady Flames rose to 33-7 as Brittany Balough and Katie Deems combined to pitch a six-hitter and Jessa Watts followed with a four-hitter featuring 11 strikeouts. Dominique Hannah was 5-for-8 with two RBIs in the doubleheader for Lee. Jennifer Ringgle and Jenevieve Cena each was 2-for-3 in game one, Ringle scoring two runs and batting in one.
Taylor Yates was 2-for-3 in the opener for Bryan (12-28), which got a seven-hitter with no earned runs from pitcher Shanna Chappell in game two.
Covenant 17-7, Tennessee Temple 2-1: At Covenant, Beth Harris was 4-for-4 with a triple, two doubles and three RBIs in the first game and 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs in the rematch for the Lady Scots (18-9). Cori Hilt was 5-for-7 with four RBIs and three runs for the day, and Christine Core was 3-for-7 and scored three runs.
Lauren Johns and Chandler Shepherd each had two RBIs for Covenant in the first game, when Morgan Booker was 2-for-2. Raven Pope was 3-for-5 with an RBI and a run for Temple's first-year team (1-23).
