For the second time in a row, the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga's Michelle Fuzzard was named Southern Conference softball player of the week. This is her seventh selection as a SoCon player or pitcher of the week in her career. Fuzzard, a fifth-year senior from Huntington Beach, Calif., had a .750 batting average in helping the Lady Mocs go 4-1 in the Frost Classic this past weekend at Warner Park. Fuzzard had nine hits and four RBIs with a 1.083 slugging percentage in the five games, and she reached base in 15 of her 18 plate appearances.
ATHENS, Tenn. -- Second-seeded Union College won the matchup of seven-game winning streaks by edging top seed Tennessee Wesleyan 55-50 with a 32-19 second-half advantage Monday night in the Appalachian Athletic Conference women's basketball tournament championship game. Cody Houck and Michelle Davis had 14 points apiece and eight and seven rebounds for Wesleyan (24-8), which shot 17.2 percent in the second half. Kara Pile had 16 points and four blocked shots, Laura Perkins scored 15 points and AAC player of the year Lindsey Waters had 10 rebounds for the 25-7 Kentucky team, which earned an automatic berth to the NAIA Division II national tournament next week. TWC is ranked 13th with the final poll due Wednesday morning and should receive one of the 11 at-large bids. Wesleyan's Jeff Rice was the AAC coach of the year, and Davis and Heather Gibson were first-team all-conference while Rochelle Davidson and Gibson made the all-defensive team. Milligan's Kayla Kelly from Chattanooga was a second-team pick, and Bryan's Anna Thomas was a third-teamer. Bryan's Mercedes Owens made the all-freshmen team. TWC's E'Jay Ward was the men's defensive player of the year, Bryan's Dion Fair was the freshman of the year, and Ward and Desmond Crisp of TWC were first-team All-AAC with teammate Quincy Scates and Bryan's Rob Riley on the second team and fellow Lion Lavonte Henderson an all-defensive choice.
Gabrielle Rice had 15 points and 10 rebounds and Jessica Salera and Shayla Wilson scored 14 and 11 points as Tennessee Temple beat visiting Oakwood University in women's basketball Monday. Amber Charles had five assists in the win.
WILMINGTON, N.C. -- The UTC men's golf team wound up fourth as the 12-team Seahawk Intercollegiate tournament ended Monday at the Country Club of Landfall, and the Mocs' Steven Fox tied for seventh at 1-under-par 215 with a final-round 69. Stephan Jaeger was 10th at 217 and Liam Johnston was 17th at 221 for the Mocs, whose 879 total was six strokes behind second-place Wake Forest but 15 behind East Carolina.
KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. -- The UTC women's golfers are in seventh place out of 33 teams going into the final round today of the Edwin Watts/Kiawah Island Classic. UTC is at 610, one shot behind Old Dominion and Daytona State. Augusta State has a 17-stroke lead at 582. Maria Juliana Loza and Yushira Budhram had second-round 73s, leaving Loza tied for 18th at 150 and Budhram and teammate Mette Kryger sharing 34th at 153 with Jordan Britt at 156.
