Two Georgia all-staters choose Mocs

Vantrel McMillan and Dee Virgin have spent a lot of time together in recent weeks. The two high school seniors played together in a couple of all-star football games and this past weekend made official visits to the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga.

The all-state defensive players from Georgia committed to UTC on Saturday, giving the Mocs 14 commitments for signing day on Feb. 1.

McMillan, a 6-foot-2, 220-pound defensive end from Monroe High School in Albany, said he had a great visit. He said he and Virgin, a defensive back from Seminole County High near the Florida state line, both liked UTC but didn't plan to commit at the same time.

"When I went up there this weekend, I just felt comfortable," McMillan said. "I was looking for a good academic program and a football program -- and that's what I found."

He and Virgin played in the Georgia North-South All Star Football Classic in December and the Georgia-Florida Border Wars All-Star game this month. McMillan was named the defensive most valuable player of the Border Wars game after making 10 tackles, with four sacks and two forced fumbles.

After a senior season that he said was "a 10 out of 10," McMillan was voted to the GSWA's Class AAA all-state second team. The 5-11, 175-pound Virgin was Class A second-team all-state after a solid final season on offense and defense.

Virgin rushed for 326 yards -- he averaged 10.2 yards a carry -- and nine touchdowns. He also had eight receptions for 279 yards and four scores and made 32 tackles and five interceptions.

UTC likely will try to add one or two more players, including a wide receiver after Bradley Central's James Stovall decommitted last week and committed to Navy.
