A bad week for Orson Charles became much worse Friday morning when the former University of Georgia tight end was arrested in Athens and charged with DUI and driving minimum speed.
Charles, who bypassed his senior season to enter next month's NFL draft, was booked around 4:30 a.m., according to the Athens-Clarke County jail report. The 21-year-old was released about an hour later after posting bond at $1,750.
Considered among the top three tight ends and the top 40 or 45 overall picks by ESPN draft analysts Mel Kiper and Todd McShay, Charles struggled to a 40-yard dash time of 4.75 seconds during Monday's blustery Pro Day at Georgia. He was scheduled to provide a free autograph session at Academy Sports + Outdoors today in Athens, but that event was canceled several hours after Friday's arrest.
Charles, a 6-foot-3, 241-pounder from Tampa, caught 45 passes for 574 yards and five touchdowns this past season. His three-year career with the Bulldogs included 94 receptions for 1,370 yards and 10 scores.
