UTC men's golf knocks off OSU

BRADENTON, Fla. - The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga men's golf team advanced to the semifinals of the Callaway Match Play by beating host South Florida and No. 22 Oklahoma State on Sunday at the Concession Golf Club.

"I'm jacked to have the guys go out and play like they did today," UTC coach Mark Guhne said. "If they play like they did today, it's going to be a fun season."

The Mocs beat USF 4-1 in the morning with Liam Johnston, Steven Fox, Chris Robb and Benni Weilguni earning victories.

UTC beat the 10-time national champion Cowboys in a tie-breaker - most holes won (8 to 5) - after UTC won two matches, OSU won two matches with one being halved.

Hogan Award finalist Stephan Jaeger halved his match with Talor Gooch while Weilguni beat Brad Gehl 5 and 3 and Robb beat Tanner Kesterdon 3 and 1. UTC will face top-seeded Arkansas in the morning semifinal.

"It's tough to beat a team on a course they play almost every day, and it's nice to beat a team like OSU, especially with the history and tradition that they have," Guhne said. "It's nice to see Chris and Benni playing well."

The finals and consolation matches will be played Tuesday.
