Lee University routs Faulkner in SSAC final, 13-0

COLUMBUS, Ga. - Lee University, ranked fifth in the NAIA, won the Southern States Athletic Conference baseball tournament championship Monday night by defeating top-seeded and third-ranked Faulkner 13-0. Faulkner (48-11) had avenged its previous tourney loss to Shorter with a 12-10 win in the losers-bracket final. Jorge Saez was 3-for-5 with four RBIs and Jose Samayoa (8-0) and two relievers combined on a three-hitter for Lee's second-seeded Flames (50-8-1). Roberto Duran scored three runs with two hits, and Edmanuel Rivera and Roberto Reyes each had two hits, two runs and two RBIs, Reyes with a homer. Earlier in the day, Lee's Saez and Kris Hall were honored as the SSAC player and pitcher of the week. Saenz was 7-for-14 with a home run, a double, five RBIs, two stolen bases and three runs scored in the Flames' three wins, and Hall raised his season record to 10-0 by allowing two hits and no runs in six innings of the tournament's winners-bracket final. His season earned run average is 1.37. Lee will host one of the nine NAIA opening-round tournaments May 10-14.

• Bryan College closer Adam Saunders, who leads the NAIA in saves this season, was the Appalachian Athletic Conference baseball pitcher of the week after breaking the league record with his 16th and 17th of the season. He is one short of the NAIA single-season record, and he is 1-0 with a 1.83 ERA. The Lions are seeded second in the conference tournament in Kingsport and are set to play Bluefield at 5 p.m. today, followed by top-seeded Tennessee Wesleyan against Virginia Intermont.


• Covenant College hosted and finished second Monday in the NCCAA Mid-East Region softball tournament. Winding up 21-20 for the season, the Lady Scots lost 4-2 and 8-5 to Trevecca Nazarene with a 14-3 win over Ohio Christian in between. Christine Core was 3-for-4 with two stolen bases and two runs scored and Jenni Jobe had two hits and scored three times in the win, when pitcher Cori Hilt struck out seven batters, Beth Harris was 1-for-2 with a two-run homer, Morgan Booker was 2-for-2 with an RBI triple, Chandler Shepherd was 2-for-3 with a triple and two RBIs and Lauren Johns was 2-for-3 with two runs. Core was 2-for-4 and Courtney Wagoner and Shephed had the RBI in the first loss to Trevecca (35-14-1). Harris homered and Hilt had two RBIs in the final, when Lindsey Stephens and Heather Shuler each had two Trevecca RBIs and Lauren Baker was 3-for-4 and scored twice.


• Casey Martin of New Market, Ala., won the Walmart Bass Fishing League Choo Choo Division tournament Saturday on Lake Guntersville with a five-bass limit totaling 24 pounds. Corey Bradley of McDonald, Tenn., was eighth with 17 pounds, 6 ounces. In the co-angler group, Phillip Criss of Scottsboro and Kibbee McCoy of Crossville, Tenn., were eighth and ninth with 12-2 and 12-1.

• Greg Rollins of Monteagle tied for eighth with a 16-1 total in the Walmart BFL Music City Division tournament Saturday on Lake Barkley, and Tullahoma's Denny Strunk was fourth among the co-anglers with 15-0.
