Safety Kameron Miles commits to UT

KNOXVILLE - Kameron Miles has yet to set foot on Tennessee's campus.

Even that couldn't keep the highly rated safety from West Mesquite High School in Texas from making the Volunteers his college choice.

The four-star prospect pulled a Vols hat out of a box during halftime of West Mesquite's spring game Monday night to signify his pledge to Tennessee.

"I want to play in the SEC," Miles told the Times Free Press in a phone interview after finishing the game. "That's really where my heart was at. I had a good connection with the coaches, and that's why I really felt comfortable."

The 6-foot-2, 200-pound Miles is UT's seventh commitment for the 2013 class and third Rivals.com four-star prospect. The three other finalists for the 14th-rated safety and No. 166 player overall according to 247Sports were Arkansas, Stanford and Penn State. Miles, who Rivals rates as the No. 10 safety and 86th player nationally, also had scholarship offers from TCU, UCLA, Ole Miss, Miami, Texas Tech, West Virginia and Vanderbilt, among others.

Miles said he plans to visit UT either unofficially this summer or in the fall on one of his official visits.

"I've got good instincts and ball skills," he said. "I play real fast, and I come downhill and hit. I've got good cover skills."

Miles has been nominated to play in the prestigious U.S. Army All-American Bowl in January along with teammate and Southern Cal receiver commitment Eldridge Massington. Miles credited his relationships with Vols coach Derek Dooley, defensive coordinator Sal Sunseri and safeties coach Josh Conklin. UT signed Dallas-area safety LaDarrell McNeil in February.

"It's just a wonderful feeling, and I'm really happy right now," Miles said. "I just really can't believe this is happening right now."

The Vols also are pursuing Ridgeland High School star Vonn Bell, another highly touted safety who has offers from 11 SEC schools, Ohio State, Notre Dame and Texas, among others.
