Jasmine Joyner, a 6-foot-1 forward from Southaven, Miss., recently became the sixth player to give a verbal commitment to play for the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga women's basketball team.

A member of the Jackson (Miss.) Clarion-Ledger "Dandy Dozen" preseason team, Joyner is at her best on defense, according to Southaven coach Dave Baldwin. Joyner averaged 6.3 blocks a game as a junior and averaged 10.0 point and 7.4 rebounds.

"She's a defensive dynamo and a shot-blocking maniac," Baldwin said.

Joyner was also considering Arkansas State, Murray State, UAB and Southern Miss.

A four-year starter, Joyner is part of a group of three seniors and two juniors on Southaven that will likely sign Division I scholarships, Baldwin said. Ranked No. 1 in Class 6A this season, Southaven reached the state semifinals last season.

While defense is Joyner's strength, Baldwin said, her offensive game has greatly improved the past few years.

"She used to be an offensive liability, and now she's not," he said. "She can shoot the mid-range jumper, she can get to the basket and as she improves her game offensively, she's going to be a well-rounded player for Chattanooga."

National signing day is Wednesday.
