Kadeem Wise from UTCUniversity of Tennessee at Chattanooga cornerback Kadeem Wise is the Southern Conference football defensive player of the week, the league announced Monday. A redshirt junior, Wise had eight tackles and helped seal the Mocs' 28-10 win last Saturday at then-No. 15 The Citadel with a fourth-quarter interception. The pickoff was the ninth of his career, tying the All-SoCon corner with UTC coach Russ Huesman for sixth on the program's all-time list. Wofford fullback Eric Breitenstein was a lock for the top offensive player award after setting a SoCon record with 321 rushing yards against Elon. Appalachian State wideout Sean Price was the freshman of the week, and Furman running back/returner Jerodis Williams was the top special-teams player. UTC (2-3, 1-1) is off this week and visits Furman on Oct. 13.
Auto Racing
• Strip hall of famer L.C. Bigham of Tunnel Hill won the Foot Brake class with his son David second Saturday night at the Brainerd Optimist Drag Strip. The elder Bigham won with a run of 8.30 seconds on an 8.30 dial in a 1972 Dodge Dart. Marty Goldsmith was third. Lance Kittle of Henagar won the Super Pro class with a 6.14 on a 6.13 in his 434 Chevy-powered 2000 S10 pickup. Hixson's Eva Lane and her husband Ron were second and third. Cody Barnhart of Cullman, Ala., won the 18-entry Junior Dragster division with a $1,000 purse; Henagar's Hunter Hill was second with Lenoir City's Josh Hughes third. Cynthia Farrow had the low elapsed time (4.74) and top speed (148.25 mph) of the meet in her 605-cubic-inch dragster tuned by her father, Ronnie Warnock.
Volleyball
• Chelsea Breaden's 12 kills and Taylor Fink's 40 assists and seven kills helped Bryan College improve to 18-7 overall and 7-1 in Appalachian Athletic Conference volleyball with a 25-22, 25-22, 25-18 win Monday at Union College. Lindsey Knight had eight kills and Carolyn Evans and Meghan Lowry matched Fink's seven for the Lady Lions, who got 15 digs from Corrie Walker and 10 from Madison Akins.
• With the help of sophomore Alex Martin's 11 kills and three block assists Saturday, Belmont won its first Ohio Valley Conference match in the Curb Event Center in Nashville. The Bruins defeated Southern Illinois-Edwardsville 25-17, 25-14, 25-15. Martin, a former all-state player at Ooltewah, led first-year OVC member Belmont (5-12, 2-2) in hitting percentage at .733.
• LynnCoya Gardner had 34 assists and eight kills as Tennessee Temple University lost 25-18, 25-16, 25-27, 25-22 in volleyball Monday at Toccoa Falls. Rachel Binkley had 10 kills and the third-set winning dig that sent her to a hospital. Shatoya Medford had nine kills and three blocks and P.J. Sexton made 21 digs for Temple (6-12).
• The Covenant College volleyball junior varsity beat the all-freshman Georgia Northwestern team 25-15, 25-19, 26-24 on Monday. Candice McClain had 13 kills and Siouxanne Hawkins and Kayla Pierce each had 10 assists for GNTC (1-8), Hawkins with four aces.
• Former Ringgold standout Kendall Williams is a middle blocker for the West Georgia volleyball team and totaled nine kills and seven block assists in a 2-1 Gulf South Conference road trip over the weekend. The Wolves defeated Union University 25-14, 25-16, 25-22 and then beat North Alabama 25-18, 25-23, 9-25, 21-25, 15-7. A 25-18, 20-25, 15-25, 25-13, 15-11 loss to Christian Brothers left the Wolves 8-7, 3-3 in the conference.
Golf
• King College senior Richard Powell from Notre Dame High School and teammate Ross Maietta tied for sixth place individually with 70s in leading the Tornado to a third-place 283 Monday out of 15 teams in the first day of the Myrtle Beach Intercollegiate tournament at the Sea Trail Golf Club. The King women are in seventh place with Walker Valley's Cortnee Young 25th at 80.
