KNOXVILLE - The University of Tennessee wasted little time in finding a replacement for an important position inside its football program.
Less than a week after David Blackburn took the athletic director position at UT-Chattanooga, Tennessee hired Mike Vollmar to take Blackburn's vacated post as the Volunteers' senior associate athletic director for football administration.
Vollmar spent the past two years working as the associate athletic director for football at Michigan.
"Mike brings a wealth of firsthand knowledge and expertise to this role," athletic director Dave Hart said in UT's release. "Our athletics program is fortunate to have him join our executive staff while also providing outstanding administrative leadership within our football program."
The Michigan native has spent 25 years in college athletics, including stops at Syracuse (1991-95), Michigan State (1996-2007) and Alabama (2008-10) and two stints at Michigan (1988-90 and 2011-13). Vollmar was responsible for the oversight of recruiting and administration during his first Michigan stint and at Syracuse, spent 11 years as MSU's director of football operations and worked under Hart with the Crimson Tide.
"It was an absolute privilege to work with Coach [Brady] Hoke and the entire football staff at Michigan, and I'm appreciative of the opportunity they afforded me," he said. "That said it is an honor for me and my family to join the University of Tennessee as I further my career professionally.
"Having worked with Dave Hart for three years previously, I am confident great things are in store for UT athletics, and with the reputation Coach [Butch] Jones has built in a short amount of time, I know Tennessee football has a bright future as well. My family and I are excited to be Tennessee Volunteers."
Blackburn worked in Tennessee's athletic department for 20 years before taking his first athletic director position with the Mocs last week.
"We are extremely excited to welcome the Vollmar family into the Tennessee football family," Jones said. "Mike is well respected in our profession and brings great knowledge and credibility based on his experience with multiple high-profile football programs."
