University of Tennessee at Chattanooga senior golfer Steven Fox missed the cut in his first PGA Tour event Friday.

The reigning U.S. Amateur champion shot 2-under-par 70 in his opening round on the Torrey Pines North Course in the Farmers Insurance Open on Thursday. He followed with a 6-over 78 on the fabled South Course.

"I'm disappointed in the way I played," Fox said via cell phone. "I know that I do belong out there and that I can compete on that level."

Fox, who played on a sponsor's exemption, was inside the cut-line after his first round, but the 78 sent him back to Chattanooga.

"Overall, it was a good week," Fox said. "I now know that I want to work on a few things like putting."

Fox said he had lunch with Camillo Villegas and spoke with Keegan Bradley, Brandt Snedeker, Justin Leonard and John Daly during his time in San Diego.

"It was pretty cool," Fox said.

Former Baylor School golfer Harris English is tied for 16th at 6 under par, and fellow Baylor alumnus Luke List, a PGA Tour rookie, also made the cut and is tied for 41st place.
