UT Vols' Johnson, Williams suspended amid sexual assault investigation

KNOXVILLE — The Knoxville Police Department has finished its investigation into the alleged rape and sexual assault involving Tennessee football players A.J. Johnson and Michael Williams.

According to a KPD statement sent late Friday night, the case file has been turned over the Knox County district attorney's office.

"Our investigation is complete at this time," KPD public information officer Darrell DeBusk said in the statement.

Johnson, a two-time All-SEC linebacker, and Williams, a walk-on who started five games at cornerback and also runs track for the Volunteers, were suspended from all team-related activities on Nov. 17, the Monday after the two were accused of rape by a 19-year-old woman.

The police investigation into the alleged incident lasted nearly a month, but it will now go over to the district attorney's office, which has been in constant communication with the KPD during its investigation.

"They will look at the investigation and the facts that we have in the case," DeBusk said last month, "and then they'll make the decision on whether there should be charges filed and what those charges should be."

The case may go before a grand jury next week.

While suspended, Johnson and Williams missed Tennessee's last two regular-season games against Missouri and Vanderbilt.

The Vols resume their preparations for the Taxslayer Bowl date with Iowa onJan. 2 by returning to practice on Sunday.
