UTC's SoCon title streaks snapped

The next six weeks are going to be rather different for University of Tennessee at Chattanooga women's golf coach Colette Murray.

In every year of her Mocs career, she's had some sort of schedule leading up to an NCAA regional tournament.

That's not the case this year.

"I've been driving back and thinking about what to do for the next month and a half," she said via cell phone. "We don't have that right now."

The Mocs shot a 16-over-par 880 at Savannah Quarters Country Club and finished runner-up to Furman in the Southern Conference tournament Tuesday.

Such a score would have won any previous SoCon tournament and actually set a tournament record. But the Lady Paladins shot a 6-under 858. Samford placed third at 881 while Wofford and Western Carolina tied for fourth at 891.

"The golf course was different from last year," Murray said. "Teams that normally don't break 300 were doing it regularly. If you put it on a harder golf course, I don't think they're shooting those scores."

UTC had won five straight SoCon tournaments and four consecutive medalist titles. Both of those streaks are over.

Taylor Totland of Furman set a tournament record with an 8-under 208 to earn medalist honors. Furman's Alice Chen was the runner-up at 4 under. UTC junior Emily McLennan placed third at 2-under, and teammate Agathe Sauzon tied for fourth at even 216. Cristina Perez tied for 18th and Megan Woods tied for 21st.

"It was a really solid performance for Emily," Murray said. "That's the kind of player she is."

But the Mocs' season is over.

"There's a difference between losing and getting beat," Murray said. "It's saddening to see our streak end."
