Three Mocs earn All-SoCon women's golf honors and other sports news

The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga senior Agathe Sauzon and junior Emily McLennan made the 10-player All-Southern Conference women's golf team for the third year in a row, and teammate Megan Woods was selected on the five-player all-freshman team. Sauzon was the Mocs' leader with a 74.70 scoring average this season, which ended in a runner-up finish in the SoCon tournament, and McLennan was close behind at 74.90. Woods' average was 77.63.

* Scott McKnight was Covenant College's all-sportsmanship representative as USA South all-conference golf honors announced Thursday.

Tennis

* Covenant's John Hirte is the men's tennis coach of the year in the USA South, and the Scots' Matthew Harvie made the all-conference first team with fellow freshman Chris Cox making the second team and also the all-sportsmanship team. Hirte directed the Scots to an 8-8 record for the most wins in program history, and they were a program-best 5-4 in conference play after going 1-8 against USA South competition in 2014. Harvie is 8-5 at No. 1 singles this year and 6-2 in league matches, and he's 9-6 and 6-3 in doubles. Cox had nine singles wins and was 6-3 in league play and also helped in six doubles wins. He and Harvie were 8-4 together.

* Covenant freshman Annie DeLuca and sophomore Claire Luger earned USA South women's tennis all-conference honorable mention, and sophomore Gracie Smith from Chattanooga Christian was the Lady Scots' all-sportsmanship selection. Luger had nine singles wins and was 7-3 in conference matches in singles, and she and Gretchen Rowe were 10-7, 7-4 at No. 1 doubles. DeLuca won 12 times in singles and was 9-3 in USA South play, where she was 7-3 in doubles to go with an 11-5 overall mark. Smith was 10-6 in singles and 12-3 in doubles, 9-1 in the USAS.

Softball

* Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe graduate Hayley Burnette had the walkoff hit that gave Carson-Newman a 7-6 softball win over Tusculum, a sweep of their South Atlantic Conference doubleheader Thursday and at least a share of the SAC regular-season title. She had another RBI single in the second inning. The Lady Eagles (34-10, 16-4) won the first game 9-1.

Basketball

* The Chattanooga Rail Runners men's minor league basketball team is hosting the Fort Wayne Flight on Sunday at 3:30 p.m. at Brainerd High school, and it has been designated the 2015 Black Out for Cancer game. The intent is to honor survivors, pay respect to those who have lost their lives to cancer and support those currently battling the disease in its various forms. Contributions can be made through the Rail Runners' website or Facebook page, including purchase for $20 of black Rail Runners T-shirts, and part of the proceeds will go to the local arm of the American Cancer Society. A game ticket will come with a donation.

Lacrosse

* Southern Lacrosse Company is holding a "Leave No Man Lacrosse Classic" this Saturday at Baylor School, and procees will go the Wounded Warrior Classic. Admission is free, but donations will be accepted. Concessions, raffles and giveaways also will help the cause. Baylor's middle school and junior varsity teams will face Chattanooga FCA teams at 10 and 11:30 a.m., and Baylor's varsity will take on John Carroll High from Alabama at 2 p.m. UTC's club team will have an intrasquad scrimmage at 4.
