Dalton State picked eighth in SSAC soccer debut

The first-year Dalton State men's soccer team was picked to finish eighth out of nine teams in balloting released Tuesday by the Southern States Athletic Conference coaches. Mobile and Bethel were co-favorites with five and three first-place votes but 74 points apiece, and Auburn-Montgomery was not far behind with the other first and 67 points. Martin Methodist was fourth, followed by William Carey, Middle Georgia State, Faulkner and DSC, with Brewton-Parker ninth. Dalton State hosts scrimmages Saturday and next Wednesday at Lakeshore Park.

Baseball

* Randy Smith pitched a five-inning one-hitter and Elijah Haynie drove in three runs with two hits as the Charleston Mojo beat the Rhea County Iron Eagles 17-1 in their first game of their Chattanooga United States Adult Baseball League doubleheader Sunday at Charleston, Tenn. Jake Wyrick, who had a two-run single in the 12-run fourth inning of that game, added a two-run home run and an RBI double in a 16-3 second-game win for the second-place Mojo, who take an 18-4 record into a 1:30 p.m. playoff game Sunday against the Chattanooga Nationals at Camp Jordan Park. The loser of that game will take on the Rhea County/East Ridge loser at 4, and there is no admission charge.
