KNOXVILLE -- Tennessee's football program continued its trend of landing big-time quarterback prospects on Sunday.

The Volunteers may have landed their biggest prize at the position yet for its 2017 class.

Hunter Johnson, rated the nation's No. 1 rising junior quarterback by both 247sports and Rivals, pulled the trigger and committed to Tennessee on Sunday afternoon.

The 6-foot-3, 197-pounder out of Brownsburg (Indiana) High School picked the Vols over Notre Dame and North Carolina State, and he had scholarship offers from Oklahoma, Florida, North Carolina, Nebraska, Missouri, Penn State, Miami and others.

Under third-year coach Butch Jones, Tennessee has signed or currently holds commitments from five four-star quarterbacks.

Current starter Joshua Dobbs signed in 2013, and after not signing a quarterback in 2014, the Vols inked three in 2015 in Quinten Dormady, Sheriron Jones and Jauan Jennings, who has since switched to wide receiver, where he's thrived this preseason.

Jarrett Guarantano, the No. 6 dual-threat quarterback in the 2016 class per 247sports, committed to Tennessee in April.

Now the Vols have landed Johnson, their first commitment for 2017.
