Eli Christman from the Soddy-Daisy High School shooting team competed in the Tennessee Skeet Shooting Association Championship this past weekend in Nashville and was fourth in the main high overall category, with 120 participants, with 388 hits in 400 targets for the three-day event. He finished first in the main HOA B class, first in the main 12- and 28-gauge A categories, where he scored 100 of 100 and 99 of 100, and first in a three-way shootoff in .410 D with 91 of 100. He was second in a shootoff for first in the 20-gauge A class after hitting 98 of 100. Christman was the varsity champion in the high school division and was second overall, first in 12, second in 20 and .410 and third in 28 in the junior division (under 18).

Soccer

* The first-year Dalton State men's soccer team won its home opener Tuesday evening, 3-0 over Milligan. Ramiro Guerrero scored the first goal 4:30 into the match, and fellow freshmen Jose Villalobos and Tomide Adabale made it 3-0 before the game was 30 minutes old. Ibrahima Sissoko, who was involved in every Dalton State goal in its first two matches, assisted on Guerrero's. Isael Guiterrez and goalkeeper Christopher Curran paced the shutout defense for the Roadrunners (2-0-1).

* Freshman Charlie Clarke scored five goals - three in the first half - as Bryan College opened its men's soccer season Tuesday night with a 9-0 win over visiting Hiwassee. Senior Joel Glover, like Clarke from Norwich, England, scored two and Rafael Mentzingen and Lionel Burgos also scored for the Lions. They outshot the first-year Tigers 59-2. Bryan's Lions host St. Catharine at 7 p.m. next Tuesday.

* The Premier Soccer Academy Rockets, based at Red Bank, won 3-2 over the Murfreesboro Soccer Club Strikers '98 Premier and 6-0 over the McMinn United Futbol Club on Saturday in the High School Boys Navy division of the Chattanooga Fall Invitational tournament at Redoubt. The Rockets were supposed to play the Chattanooga FC '98 Boys Premier on Sunday, but that day's action was rained out. Chattanooga FC won 6-0 over McMinn UFC but lost 3-2 to the MSC Strikers on Saturday.

Equestrian

* United Kingdom native Karine Gordy from the Charhan Stables Training Facility on Lookout Mountain and Walnut Trace Farms in Nashville has been hired as the director of equestrian at Sewanee. "Karine has exceptional experience in the equestrian industry in both Great Britain and the U.S., and I look forward to her enthusiastic vision for the program being realized," Sewanee athletic director Mark Webb said in the announcement release Tuesday. "I am thrilled to join the Sewanee family and have the opportunity to work with the riders," Gordy said. A certified instructor for the British Horse Society and the United States Dressage Federation, she began her teaching career at Churchill Stables in England. "Winston Churchill once said, 'The outside of a horse is good for the inside of a person,'" Gordy related. "Sewanee offers this type of good both inside and outside the arena." She has been the head trainer at Walnut Trace Farms and the sole proprietor of Charhan Stables since 2014, according to the Sewanee release.

Basketball

* Evaluations for the third annual Chattanooga Area Basketball Club high-school-age boys' fall league are set for next Wednesday at East Ridge High School, where games will be played Sept. 8, 14, 22 and 28 and Oct. 13 with a tournament on Oct. 20. Players need to sign up at www.cabchoops.com before Sept. 2. "Last year we had over 100 players from 20-plus schools participate," CABC executive director Daniel Gilbert said. "Our A Flight consisted of 60 top players from the Chattanooga area. We had over 15 colleges come watch our league." The B Flight was comprised mostly of sophomores and freshmen.
